The Whyte Ave Fire, and an Albertan Getaway

Written by Kristy-Lynn , who proudly lives in ALBERTA.

It’s 3:30 in the morning and I am listening to the scream of power tools and the banging of hammers as workers board up windows on 82nd and 99th Street here in Edmonton. My heart goes out to the people who lost their businesses in the fire. My apartment sits across the alley, and I woke to shattering glass and sirens, not the kind of thing you expect to be woken up to. There was no way I could sleep so I grabbed my camera and started shooting away through my window screen. Here is one of the photos taken, I haven’t seen any other photo that captures the fire like this.

This is my first opportunity to blog on this site, and I want to start off by declaring that I am very proud to be an Albertan. Today was my first day really getting out there and talking with some wonderful people and business owners. My day brought me to a local business called Cha Island Tea Co (a tropical themed tea and coffee lounge, ummm…yes please!). It was one of the most refreshing places I have ever stepped into – bright colored walls, palm trees, a real beach vibe. I wish I knew about this when it was -30 degrees out. If you’re an Albertan you understand. I met the owner Jake who made me a lemon blueberry green tea, he definitely is a tea expert. They also have fun food like paninis and waffles as well as special events happening on different days of the week. I’m still wondering what a Whyte Noise Drum Circle is, the twitter feed says its loud so maybe I’ll be able to hear it from my apartment.

Anyways I just want to say, I LOVE LOCAL! Supporting and being involved with local businesses is so exciting, and I love being part of this community already.
